London's Underground workers are breathing a sigh of relief as the RMT union and Transport for London (TfL) have reached a three-year pay agreement, averting potential strikes that could have disrupted the city's transport network. The deal, announced by the RMT, includes a 3.4% pay increase from April 1, 2025, with a guaranteed 3% rise in the second year and a 2.5% increase in the third year. This agreement comes after five days of strikes in September, which caused significant disruption to Londoners' daily commutes.
The RMT's General Secretary, Eddie Dempsey, praised the union's strong negotiation, stating, 'This deal is a testament to the power of strike action and the effectiveness of our members' efforts.' The union also secured 'fatigue-friendly' rosters, further discussions on staff travel, and a consistent Boxing Day payment of £400. Importantly, the pay deal does not include any changes to working hours, ensuring that employees' schedules remain unaffected.
TfL, in response, expressed their satisfaction with the RMT's acceptance of their pay offer, describing it as 'fair, affordable, and providing certainty for our colleagues over several years.' The spokesperson added that they are engaging with all unions to gather feedback on the offer, indicating a collaborative approach to managing the city's transport services. This agreement marks a significant step towards maintaining the smooth operation of London's Underground, preventing further industrial action and ensuring a more stable environment for both workers and commuters.
