Helldivers 2's developers have pulled off an impressive feat, reducing the game's PC file size by a whopping 85%, which translates to a massive 131GB of space saved on your drive! Imagine having room for not just one, but two more large games, all thanks to this clever update.
But here's where it gets controversial... The developers, in their quest to bring the PC version in line with console editions, have implemented a unique strategy. By completely removing duplicate data, they've managed to shrink the installation size from a hefty 154GB to a mere 23GB. This move, while saving space, has sparked a debate among gamers and tech enthusiasts alike.
The developers assure us that the reduction in file size will have minimal impact on load times, with only a few seconds of difference at most. But why was the original file size so large in the first place? It turns out, the developers were duplicating game asset data to enhance load times for those using mechanical HDDs, which, as it happens, is only about 11% of the Helldivers 2 player base.
And this is the part most people miss... The developers have since discovered that load times in Helldivers 2 are primarily influenced by level generation, not the loading of game assets. So, all that duplicated data was providing minimal benefit to a small percentage of players, while increasing the file size for everyone.
